Male Sexual Continence  – a New Approach

„The conquering of the subconscious by the consciousness is the only real revolution, the only progress which is dignified enough to bear this name and the human kind can hope for.” (Rajneesh)

When we row a boat on still waters we can admire freely the beauties of nature, the clearness of the sky, the rays of the sun that play among the leaves of the trees, anything we want, and also, most importantly, we can control the direction of the boat. When the course of the river approaches the waterfall, the waters become more and more agitated and whirling. An experienced boatman knows how to handle the boat in these conditions without exposing himself to the danger of reaching the waterfall. There is a point which, in case he reaches it, he will loose control of the boat and he will fall into the waterfall. But right before this point there is another point of salvation in extremis. In that point, even if he still has a chance to escape, the fight with the whirling waters will require a lot of effort from him. I f he wants to learn how to enjoy rowing the boat, experience will show him how to maintain wisely his trips with the boat in the area where the control is easy to exercise. That’s the way things are also with the amorous interactions in the case of the man. There is a stage at the beginning that resembles rowing the boat on still waters, a middle stage resembling rowing on more whirling waters and an ending that can be similar to falling into a waterfall if the discharge occurs or avoiding it in the case of practicing sexual continence. Avoiding discharge, avoiding falling into the waterfall metaphorically speaking, actually means achieving sexual continence.

As also John Humphrey Noyes says in his work “Male Continence” “the usual objection to this method (sexual continence) is (…) the fact that we do not find it in the mating habits of the other animals. But we could say that as well, also about cooking, the habit of wearing clothes, living in houses and almost any activity specific to the civilized man – we could say that it is not natural. A too close adhesion to the habits of the animals would require from us to forget about language and to start to move on four feet. On the other hand, if it is natural (…) for the rational beings to abandon the example of animals and to perfect nature by inventions and findings in all directions, we have to confess that until men and women will not find a way to raise their sexual performances above the animal ones by introducing them in their moral culture, they will continue to live in a state of unnatural degradation”.

The amorous function and the reproductive function – two distinct aspects that use the same physiological system
The amorous and the reproductive functions, that are fulfilled by the sexual organs, are different from one another and can be separated also practically. On the objective level of living, these two functions are experienced in the form of orgasm (the amorous function) and in the form of ejaculation (the reproductive function). Because of lack of knowledge about these aspects and because of the fact that the physiology of the organism allows fulfilling distinctly these two functions, allowing achieving sexual continence for both men and women (in the case of women being easier), most couples in our society suffer because of lack of real, harmonious fulfilling on the amorous level.
In the following, we will describe shortly a few physiological details that explain how the orgasm, in the case of the man, can be experienced without discharge because the organism is endowed with all the necessary mechanisms and nervous circuits for achieving male sexual continence.
Physiological base of male sexual continence

continenta masculina

Corp cavernos – cavernous body
Piele – skin
Vena – vein
Tunica albuginee – albuginea tunic
Spatii cavernoase – cavernous spaces
Artera cavernoasa – cavernous artery
Vene – veins
Stadiu flasc – flaccid state
Spatii cavernoase marite – widened cavernous spaces
Venele sunt comprimate – veins are compressed
Stadiu erect – erect state
What happens actually in the organism of a man in the moment of erotic stimulation? From the physiological point of view, sexual stimulation determines discharge of neurotransmitters from the cavernous nerves to the structures of the penis. This triggers the relaxation of the sleek muscles and the appearance of the following phenomena: the increase of the blood flow into the penis triggered by the dilatation of the arteries and of the arterioles; the accumulation of the blood in the sinusoids that expand; the reduction of the flow of blood that returns from the penis triggered by the compression of the venous plexus. Because of the increasing blood flow that enters and the reduction of the one that leaves the penis structures, the pressure from the cavernous bodies increases very much and this makes the penis rise (the state of complete erection).
The cavernous nerves that transmit the nervous impulses responsible for the physiology of   erection but also of the discharge in the case of men are made of more types of nervous fibers that come from the sacral region of the spinal marrow, from the inferior thoracic region of the spinal marrow and from a certain region of the brain. The nervous impulses that come from the spinal marrow or from the cortex have the role to coordinate the amorous physiology. The impulses from the cortex are transmitted through the nervous fibers that leave from the brain to all these systems that conduct the nervous impulses, constituting thus the physical support for the conscious control necessary for achieving sexual continence.
Thus there are three major nervous circuits that serve the amorous and the reproductive functions: the reflex one that closes at the level of the sacral marrow – the inferior circuit corresponding to SWADHISTANA CHAKRA, then the one that is constituted from the fibers from the level of the inferior thoracic marrow - the middle circuit corresponding to an energetic focus area of connection between MANIPURA CHAKRA and ANAHATA CHAKRA and the one that contains fibers from the level of the cortex – the superior circuit corresponding to AJNA CHAKRA. The nervous impulses circulate through these circuits ascending from the level of the penis to the marrow and the brain, as well as also descending – from the spinal marrow or the cortex to the penis structures, thus making possible the integration of the amorous sensations and erotic stimuli at subconscious level (spinal marrow) and conscious level (cortex) as well as also the modulation of the movements and the appearance of the secretions specific to the amorous interaction.
Depending on the attitude and the intention with which the amorous interaction is done by the man, predominantly active will be one or two or all three nervous circuits that serve the physiology of this process. The erection is maintained by the activation of the inferior circuit through the desire to interact amorously. Love and the feeling of self-giving to his lover activate the middle circuit. The impulses that come from the cortex, being the highest level of the integration in the nervous system and corresponding to the highest level of the intention and consciousness of the human being, have the role to “watch” the processes of the amorous interaction, determining, because of the conscious desire to achieve sexual continence, certain actions of stopping or correcting things in case that “the boat is headed dangerously to the waterfall”.
If consciously or unconsciously the desire to fulfill base pleasure is predominant, when the stimulation is very intense, descending nervous impulses are emitted from the thoracic-lumbar orsacral marrow, impulses that are responsible for the seminal discharge, which is the first phase of the ejaculation. But if there is a profound state of love and self-giving, that determines a firm ascending orientation of the experiences, this overcharge with nervous impulses of the inferior and middle circuits is directed towards the cortex structures and, from the point of view of the subtle processes, the transmutation and the sublimation of the creative potential takes place.
The physiology studies have shown that the impulses from the cortex may have an inhibitory role as well as also a stimulating role on the discharge of the creative potential. This proves that, in fact, the man can choose between the two possibilities, he can choose in which way this potential should be used. From the point of view of the experience, these two possibilities are: 1. fulfilling a base pleasure, which will have as consequence the waste of the creative potential, because the capacity to “fill” with nervous stimuli the inferior circuit and the middle one is limited and in order to avoid “burning” the circuits, at a certain moment, there will appear the command to flow out the potential that sustains that, thus appearing the discharge; 2. the second possibility is to experience a profound state of happiness, a state of deep spiritual fulfillment, which is sustained physiologically because the superior circuit can integrate any “quantity” of nervous impulses in the high, subtle structures of the being, when such an orientation is present.
Observing the nervous circuits that serve the amorous interaction, we realize the triple integration that an amorous interaction must have. The complete integration on the three levels – erotic, affective and mental / over mental is desirable  in order to experience a profound fulfilling in an amorous interaction. But for this the practice of the sexual continence is absolutely necessary.

Male sexual continence – essential condition for experiencing the prolonged orgasm
Experimental researches on the brain done by placing certain fine electrodes at the level of the cortex have shown that orgasm is not generated by direct excitation of the sexual center at the level of the sacral marrow, but by the stimulation of certain areas of the cortex. When psycho physiologist Jose Delgado has done this experiment on lab mice, he was surprised by the result of the experiment. After fixing the electrode at the level of the brain in the area responsible for orgasm and after teaching the mouse how to push the button that was discharging small electrical impulses at the level of the electrode, the mouse pushed the button … 6000 times on that day. It did not want to eat or to sleep on that day, it forgot about all the rest of the activities. From these researches it was concluded that the orgasm, physiologically speaking, appears at the level of the cortex and the interaction with the beloved one brings forth the manifestation of the sexual energy that ascends and stimulates the area of the cortex responsible for orgasm. The more powerfully this energy ascends, not being lost by discharge, the more intense and profound the states of orgasms are. The oftener the phenomenon of sexual discharge in a man occurs, the more and more reduced is his capacity to attain profound states of orgasm and implicitly ecstatic happiness.
Tantric teachings affirm that male orgasm appears in the left side of the brain, this being considered the male brain, while the female orgasm appears in the right side of the brain, this being considered the female brain. When the experiences in the two sides of the brain unite, the total orgasm appears. A predominantly analytical mind makes more difficult the subtle connection between the two hemispheres. A poetic, esthetic approach will make easier the access to experiencing joy, pleasure, ecstasy. Tantrism affirms that once this mechanism has been understood, a deep understanding of the amorous experiences may appear.

Amorous interaction between man and woman – a reflection of the divine play between consciousness and energy
From the spiritual point of view, the amorous interaction between a man and a woman reflects the play between consciousness and energy, between SHIVA and SHAKTI. SHIVA, the universal male principle represents the Great Spirit, the Universal Spirit in effervescence, in manifestation. As universal principle, SHIVA is related directly to the mental function and the Eternal Spirit. The man, during the amorous play, is or should be the embodiment of SHIVA – the unconditioned, infinite and full of bliss consciousness. The man can manifest SHIVA in the moment when he is permissive to SHIVA’s consciousness. The man who practices sexual continence, because he does not let himself enslaved by the pleasures of the inferior desires, does not fall into the trap of the attraction generated by the desire to fulfill only the physical senses, contemplates during the amorous interaction, while manifesting a detached involvement, in the likeness of SHIVA, the wonderful play of the energy, of SHAKTI, in his beloved one.

The nature of the woman is mysteriously attracted to SHIVA’s consciousness and even if the man is not fully  identified with SHIVA’s consciousness, because of the woman’s approach to this universal principle for a total polarization during the amorous play, SHIVA can manifest himself through the being of the man. In Shiva Purana it is said about SHIVA that “his nature is so extraordinary that he can be known only through direct spiritual experience”. “His consciousness is characterized by an absolute purity and luminosity. SHIVA enjoys an absolute independence and freedom, not being subjected to any law. He is the master of the cosmic laws. He is the supreme infinite happiness, the infinite love and compassion. The burning aureoles of SHIVA represents not only his glory and energy of the divinity, but also the fire of purification that destroys all false concepts of the spirit, the blind passions, the possessive desires and the huge self-pride of the ego”. The sacred texts say that SHIVA teaches us the way to liberation, the path to the transformation of the consciousness, the way back to the essential unity.
That’s why the profound spiritualization of the amorous act through intention and attitude, through manifesting the fundamental male and female principles is a charming way to inner transformation. This is possible on the minimum condition for the man to practice perfectly sexual continence. Consequently, male sexual continence transforms the amorous act from a time trial to reach orgasm into a pleasant and fascinating mean to access the superior levels of the consciousness.

„If you get attached even to the purest joy
Instantly have you broken the wings of life;
But if you enjoy this joy,
leaving it freely in its will,
You shall live in the wonderful
eternal sunrise of Eternity.”   (William Blake)
